Symphony of the Holocaust:
Screening at Vanderbilt University
October 30, 2024
Vanderbilt University Holocaust Lecture Series
The moving documentary Symphony of the Holocaust will screen at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, as a part of the university’s 47th annual Holocaust Memorial Lecture Series. The screening will be followed by a live performance of the symphony by the Vanderbilt student orchestra conducted by Dr. Noreen Green, with Adam Millstein as solo violinist, and a panel discussion on the music of the Holocaust.
Symphony of the Holocaust is a feature documentary about the life of master violinist and Holocaust survivor Shony Alex Braun, who used his experiences in the Nazi death camps to compose “Symphony of the Holocaust,” a haunting yet hopeful testament to the memory of the millions of Jews murdered by the Nazis during World War II. After his miraculous survival, Shony composed over 200 works on his prized violin.
The Holocaust Memorial Lecture Series was established by the University Chaplain, Rev. Beverly A. Asbury, in 1977 and it has become the longest-running continuous lecture series on the Holocaust at an American university. Dedicated to reflection on ourselves and our society in the wake of the Holocaust, the series has brought notable scholars, survivors, refugees, and rescuers, as well as artistic examinations of the Holocaust to Vanderbilt’s campus and the wider Nashville community. The theme for the 47th annual series is Songs of Zion: Music for Lament, Strength, and Memory.
