Maestra Green Conducts the VOPA Orchestra: Oklahoma!
February 15 – 16 & 22 – 23, 2025
El Portal Theatre
Presented by Valley Opera & Performing Arts

Come on out to the Old West with VOPA in their biggest production to date, performed at the historic El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood. Two incredible casts will alternate between 8 performances over two weekends. If you saw VOPA’s smash hit, Fiddler on the Roof, last June, you’ll recognize some favorites on stage, including Tevye himself, Dylan F. Thomas. This is a production not to be missed, so bring your family along and enjoy the ride!
Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s first great collaboration was a sensation when it premiered in New York in 1943 at the height of World War II. The duo of upper middle-class Jewish New Yorkers hit a nerve when they reimagined Lynn Rigg’s 1931 play Green Grow the Lilacs to fulfill a commission from the Theatre Guild to create a “folk opera.” The resulting musical broke new ground, allowing the drama to dictate lyric and musical choices, placing songs in context.
In a Western territory just after the turn of the 20th century, a high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful background for Curly, a charming cowboy, and Laurey, a feisty farm girl, to play out their love story. Their romantic journey, as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road, contrasts with the comic exploits of brazen Ado Annie and hapless Will Parker in a musical adventure embracing hope, determination and the promise of a new land.

Valley Opera & Performing Arts (VOPA) is in its 19th season of bringing opera and other musical genres to Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley and beyond. VOPA presents performances of everything from fully staged opera and musical theater works with orchestra, to laid back concerts of jazz standards and even classic rock concerts with its band VOPA Rocks. Through the company’s Opera Tree Outreach, Education, and Community Service program, VOPA provides entertainment for underserved and economically or otherwise disadvantaged communities such as retirement communities, charities, homeless shelters, schools, and hospitals.
