The LAJS kicked off its 20th anniversary season on Sunday, March 9th with Klassics to Klezmer, with a unique blend of classical music and the traditional sound of Eastern Europe’s Klezmer! 

Maestra Noreen Green and the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony String Ensemble, in collaboration with American Jewish University Whizin Center for Continuing Education, celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the LAJS and the 75th Anniversary of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation (AICF).

As part of a West Coast tour to celebrate AICF’s anniversary, two of their outstanding soloists, AICF scholarship winners and internationally acclaimed performers Andy Feldbau, piano, and Asi Matathias, violin, joined the LAJS in a rare performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s thrilling Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings.  Also featured was LAJS Klezmer Master Zinovy Goro, clarinet, performing Srul Glick’s The Klezmer Wedding.

Klassics to Klezmer was part of the Whizin Center For Continuing Education programming at the American Jewish University.

FEATURED SOLOISTS

Zinovy Goro was born in Kiev, studied at the State Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Kiev, and enjoyed a prestigious career as principal clarinetist in the State Honored Symphony Orchestra of Radio and Television.   Upon arrival in the United States, he continued training at the Trebas Institute of Recording Arts in Los Angeles.   A brilliant exponent of the clarinet in all types of music, including the highly specialized field of Klezmer music, he has employed his talents to excellent effect in countless television and motion picture soundtracks, and orchestral recordings with major record labelsAs a composer, orchestrator, arranger and clarinetist, Mr. Goro has worked in this capacity with the L.A. Chamber Orchestra, and is currently principal clarinetist for the LAJS.  

Young rising star pianist and composer Andy Feldbau has given solo recitals at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Los Angeles’ Ford Theatre, London’s Steinway Hall, The Juilliard School’s Paul Hall, Tel Aviv Museum of Arts, Beer Sheva’s Center for the Performing Arts, Holon Theatre, and Jerusalem Theatre, as well as playing live broadcasts on WQXR in New York and on WFMT in Chicago.  During a tour in Europe in spring of 2011, Mr. Feldbau was the featured artist at prestigious venues in London, Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich.  

In addition to his scholarship for Excellence from the AICF, Mr. Feldbau won First Prize in the American Protégé International Piano Competition, and various competitions in Israel and Russia. He has also received additional Merits from The Juilliard School and other cultural organizations in the US and abroad.

At 25 years old, violinist Asi Matathias is already recognized as one of the most celebrated talents of his generation. He made his debut at the age of fourteen with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Zubin Mehta, displaying a musical maturity and inspiration far beyond his years, and was invited to play again with Maestro Mehta the following season.  Since then, Mr. Matathias has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras around the globe under the baton of distinguished conductors Mehta, Leon Botstein, Stephen Gunzenhauser, and others.   He has recorded for the BBC, CBC, WQXR, IBA and ORF, and is a frequent recitalist performing extensively throughout Europe, USA, Asia and Israel.  

Currently, Mr. Matathias is studying with Pinchas Zukerman and his teaching associate Patinka Kopec at the Manhattan School of Music where he is the recipient of the Ambrose Monell Award.
