
The Forgotten Master of Jewish Music: David Nowakowsky
The subject of her Doctoral Treatise, Dr. Green will relay her journey exploring the life and music of Russian/Ukrainian Jewish composer David Nowakowsky (1848-1921). Nowakowsky was the Music Director and Choirmaster of the Brody Synagogue in Odessa, Ukraine for 50 years. Considered the “Bach” of Jewish Music, he integrated traditional Jewish liturgical modes with western harmonies and styles, reinvigorating music for the synagogue.
